Grid Power Outage Strikes Sri Lanka Following Monkey-Caused Malfunctions at Electric Facility
In a bizarre turn of events, Sri Lanka experienced an island-wide power outage on February 9, 2025. The cause? A monkey coming into contact with a grid transformer at a power plant in a southern suburb of Colombo.
This incident brings back memories of the summer of 2022, when Sri Lanka faced prolonged electricity blackouts amidst a severe economic crisis. The power outage in 2025, however, was not limited to specific areas but affected the entire island.
Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody confirmed the unusual cause, stating that the monkey's contact with the transformer caused an imbalance in the system, leading to the nationwide outage.
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is making every effort to rectify the island-wide power failure promptly. However, the full extent of the outage remains unclear.
Hospitals and businesses were among those affected, requiring them to scramble for backup generators. Fuel shortages during the time forced thermal power plants to ration electricity to only 13 hours daily.
This incident is a reminder of the power outages that Sri Lanka faced in the summer of 2022, amidst a severe economic crisis. Engineers are working to restore service as quickly as possible, but the challenges are immense.
As the country continues to grapple with its economic woes, the power outage serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of the country's infrastructure. The CEB and the government are urging citizens to conserve energy and remain patient as they work to restore power.
