In the heart of Berlin, the opening of the 16th section of the A100 motorway last Thursday has led to a surge of traffic chaos in the Berlin-Treptow junction area. This new section, running from the Neukölln interchange to the Treptow junction, has caused long traffic jams, heavy traffic, and confusing situations, according to local residents and commuters.

The Berlin state association of the German Environmental Aid (BUND) has been vocal in its criticism of the motorway's opening, stating that it deliberately plunged adjacent districts into chaos. The affected bus lines, M43 and 194, have been significantly impacted by the tailbacks, which have been accepted as part of the planning to achieve the fastest possible traffic relief for the districts.

The traffic light system controlling the inflow into the downstream road network has been a significant contributor to the ongoing tailbacks, especially during peak times. This system, installed by the Berlin Senate to avoid overloading, aims to control the inflow into the downstream road network. However, it has resulted in significant tailbacks on the motorway.

Pedestrians and cyclists are particularly affected by the traffic situation. To mitigate the impact, Berlin's public transport company (BVG) temporarily restricted bus services over the Elsenbrücke, bringing buses as close as possible to the Elsenbrücke on both sides. Passengers affected by the traffic jam can use the S-Bahn or walk over the bridge.

Tino Schopf, the SPD's spokesman for mobility and transport in the House of Representatives, has called for the closure of the new A100 section. He has been a vocal critic of the traffic situation, stating that it continues to cause chaos in the area. Construction work on the adjacent Elsenbrücke, a traffic bottleneck, has also contributed to the tense traffic situation.

Despite the chaos, the traffic administration has not apparently addressed the issue. The responsible motorway company stated that the traffic lights aim to control the inflow into the downstream road network, and a dosed traffic light control system was installed at the end of the construction section. However, it seems that more needs to be done to alleviate the ongoing traffic chaos in the Berlin-Treptow junction area.
