Groundbreaking ceremony for the new construction of the "Regenbogen" day care center

In the heart of Schönwalde I/Südstadt, preparations are underway for a significant change. The city's first communal kindergarten constructed using sustainable timber framing is set to replace the existing facility, which was built in the 1970s and no longer meets current building and fire safety standards.

The new kindergarten, designed by the architectural firm N+B from Berlin, will span approximately 2,000 square meters and accommodate 172 children, with 60 toddlers and 112 kindergarten-aged children. The construction will occur in two phases.

The first phase, scheduled for completion by November 2026, will include modern group rooms for toddlers and kindergarten-aged children. The new facility will be a "movement kindergarten," featuring a large sports and yoga room.

Some children participated in the groundbreaking ceremony today, watching as the construction of their new facility began. Excited anticipation fills the air as they look forward to the day when they can explore the fresh kitchen with a cafeteria and the diverse outdoor movement activities the new kindergarten will offer.

The new building will be erected on the same plot of land next to the current building on Ernsthofer Wende. The second phase, beginning in early 2027, will include a single-story addition housing a sports room and a fresh kitchen with a cafeteria. Completion is planned for November 2027.

The new kindergarten will be a beacon of sustainability in the city, using timber framing to reduce its carbon footprint and promote a greener future for the children who will attend. The community eagerly awaits the completion of this much-needed facility, which will provide a safe, modern, and inviting learning environment for the city's youngest residents.
