Growth in public transportation's approval and demand swells

In a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Transport, it was revealed that support for a climate-friendly transportation policy remains high among the population of Baden-Württemberg. The survey, which has been carried out every two years for the past ten years, polled 1,000 German-speaking individuals aged 16 and above in the state.

The survey this year focused on the fair design and financing of mobility, with categories including Climate Protection, Transport, Car Traffic, Public Transportation, Electric Mobility, Elderly People, and People with Disabilities. The results of the survey are representative of the total population's structure.

Transport Minister Winfried Hermann sees the survey results as confirmation that a large part of the population wants more buses and trains. Hermann, who invested additional funds last year in the renovation of particularly endangered bridges, emphasizes the importance of maintaining the existing infrastructure, particularly in light of the large renovation needs of bridges.

Hermann also proposes a Mobility Pass for better financing of public transportation expansion. The cities of Karlsruhe, Freiburg, and the Ortenau district have already taken steps to implement a mobility pass in the last two years, working as pioneer municipalities on this project. The state has created the legal basis for the Mobility Pass with the State Mobility Act.

Two-thirds of respondents view a Mobility Pass positively. Hermann urges the federal government to increase regionalization funds, stating that good public transportation requires more money. The importance of maintaining and building roads has slightly increased compared to 2023.

The survey was conducted between May 12 and 23, 2025, using computer-assisted telephone interviews. The survey results are broken down by relevant categories according to the spatial categories of the External: State Development Plan 2002.

Over the past decade, the state has expanded the regional transport offering by more than a third. Contact information for the Ministry of Transport is available through the Press Office and Citizen Liaison Officer. For more updates and information, please visit the Ministry's official website.
