Guidance in Scholarly Investigations: Navigating Uniqueness Obstacles
In the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, a student is preparing for a summer of groundbreaking research, all thanks to the guidance of their mentor and the inspiring life work of a Brazilian psychoanalyst, Nise da Silveira.
The student, who is also a student of theatre, found themselves at a crossroads when it came to their Junior Paper (JP). Feeling lost and having written nothing, they sought the advice of Professor Pedro Meira Monteiro, their adviser at the University of California, Riverside.
Professor Meira Monteiro, renowned for her insightful words, compared research to acting, emphasising the importance of a unique perspective. This comparison provided a push in the right direction for the student's research. Encouraging them to write without worrying about originality, she helped the student apply the idea of personal voice to academia.
The student's JP is focused on Nise da Silveira, a pioneering figure in Brazilian psychology who graduated as the only woman from her university in 1926. Da Silveira's life and work are a testament to resilience and innovation, having returned to Rio de Janeiro after more than a year in jail and eight years in exile. She was imprisoned for her communist beliefs, but her teachings continue to inspire artists and researchers alike.
The summer research will involve looking at current artists who use da Silveira's teachings as creative inspiration. The student believes that this approach will provide a fresh and engaging perspective on da Silveira's work, and they are eager to delve deeper into this exciting field.
At Princeton, where the student previously studied, success and novelty are often conflated. However, the student has realised that putting words in their own voice is enough for successful research. This realisation has been instrumental in shaping their approach to the JP, and they are confident that it will serve them well in their upcoming summer research in Rio de Janeiro.
The student's JP is intended to provide background knowledge for this summer research, setting the stage for what promises to be an enlightening and transformative journey. The student's mentor, Dylan, who supervised their PhD in Philosophy at the University of Memphis, where Dylan earned his doctorate in 1996, has been a constant source of support and encouragement throughout this process.
