Guide for Novices in Creating Hair for Digital Artworks

In the realm of digital art, mastering the art of illustrating hair can elevate your characters to new heights. This guide will walk you through a comprehensive digital hair drawing tutorial, offering insights on creating volume, structure, and personality through hairstyles.

The journey begins with outlining the character's head using a provided template or modifying it to fit the desired hairstyle. The hairline, a crucial element, is determined in the second step. Different shapes, such as round or rectangular, are used based on the hairstyle in question.

Next, we move on to sketching in sections of the hairstyle using basic shapes as outlines. Each section contributes to a sense of volume and structure, setting the foundation for the intricate details to follow. For straight hairstyles, hard edges are blended, while curly styles are left more defined for later blending.

For curly styles, varying coil type will help create depth and mirror the real-life appearance of curly hair. Short hair or fade haircuts require some areas to remain more transparent to highlight the overall haircut shape. Repeating steps of adding coils and strands, and blending edges, will help achieve the desired shape and flow.

Considering the flow of hair for long or wavy hair, and the way short hair is shaped around ears, is essential to ensure a natural and cohesive look. Blending some curls will give ponytails a more natural appearance, while leaving defined edges for curly styles.

Artists draw hairstyle inspiration from both real-life and fictional individuals. Examples include Andy Warhol and Princess Leia. The importance of hairstyles in illustrations cannot be overstated. They can demonstrate attitude, personality, or even tiredness (bedhead).

As we refine our design, we add color and highlights, removing any shapes or strands that don't align with our vision. Individual strands, waves, or coils are added with a lighter or less saturated color.

The tutorial is designed for digital drawing, using the app Procreate, but can be modified and used with other mediums. It's important to remember that experimentation is key. Try new hairstyles on characters with different hair textures, hair colors, hair types, and hair lengths.

Finally, fill in the sketched outline with the darkest shade. Use yourself as a reference for inspiration, and let your creativity flow. With practice and patience, you'll be able to bring your characters to life through their hairstyles.

The necessary tools for this tutorial include a drawing tablet, template, digital drawing app, stylus or drawing pen, paper, HB pencil, eraser, and blending stump. Happy drawing!
