Guide to Berlin Art Week 2025: An Insider's Perspective

Berlin Art Week returns for its annual celebration of art and culture, running from the 10th to the 14th of September. This city-wide festival attracts over 130,000 visitors, offering a diverse range of events, exhibitions, and performances.

The week kicks off on Wednesday with major museums opening their doors, followed by Gallery Night and the Positions Berlin Art Fair in Tempelhof on Thursday. Participating venues must host an opening or major event during the week, ensuring a lively and engaging schedule.

Mona Stehle, the director of Berlin Art Week, recommends starting the week by picking a part of the city and diving in on Wednesday. She suggests attending as many openings as possible to get a broad overview of the city's art scene. For those seeking a more curated experience, the events are selected either by jury or through specialist partners.

One of the highlights of this year's Berlin Art Week is the major group exhibition "Global Fascisms" at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, opening on the 13th of September. This thought-provoking exhibition explores the aesthetic and political dynamics of fascism.

Friday is known as Featured Night, focusing on Berlin's independent scene and special initiatives. Artists are being creative in finding more accessible spaces or new ways of collaboration due to financial precarity within the art scene. This creativity is evident in nomadic initiatives such as Trauma taking over a former church and Passage staging projects at Hermannplatz U-Bahn and Funkhaus Berlin.

Saturday highlights private collections, and this year, there is a new initiative called "Discovering Collections." Five private collectors will open their homes to the public, offering a unique insight into their personal collections. Unfortunately, the search results do not provide information on specific private collectors participating in "Discovering Collections" during Berlin Art Week 2023.

Throughout the week, Berlin Art Week Garten at the Hamburger Bahnhof serves as a hub for information, meetings, and networking. Here, visitors can find out what's happening during the event, meet other art enthusiasts, and enjoy a variety of performances and parties.

On Sunday, events take place across the city, from Wilhelm Hallen in Reinickendorf to Fahrbereitschaft in Lichtenberg. Berlin Art Week 2023 promises to be an exciting and inspiring week, showcasing the best of Berlin's vibrant and diverse art scene.
