Guidelines for Navigating the Waterways of Ludwigsburg County
In the picturesque regions of Baden-Württemberg, several health warnings and prohibitions have been issued for swimming in various rivers, including the Neckar, Enz, Rems, Murr, and their tributaries.
The Neckar, a popular waterway for recreational activities, has several areas where swimming is not recommended or outright prohibited. In Remseck, bathing is forbidden at Neckarstrand due to the danger posed by shipping. Similarly, bathing in the Neckar and Rems in Pleidelsheim is prohibited for the same reason. Swimming in the Old Neckar is also off-limits due to an access ban for nature conservation purposes.
However, it's important to note that registered bathing waters in the region are safe for swimming. Unfortunately, there are no registered river bathing spots in the Ludwigsburg district. The Baden-Württemberg bathing water map only shows one hit for the Ludwigsburg district, the Lower Seewaldsee in Vaihingen-Horrheim.
Elsewhere in the district, bathing in streams and rivers is not prohibited but not recommended due to potential pathogens from sewage treatment plants. Health officials also warn against bathing in waters that are not registered as bathing waters due to the lack of water quality examination.
Putting your feet in the river is not forbidden, but health officials warn that without proper hygienic monitoring, no conclusions can be drawn about the cleanliness of the water. In particular, swimming near the power plant and shipping canal in the Neckar is life-threatening due to hidden forces beneath the surface.
The Lower Seewaldsee in Vaihingen-Horrheim, the only registered bathing spot in Ludwigsburg district, has received no reports of a bathing ban, elevated microbiological parameter values, or the occurrence of blue-green algae.
The registration of a bathing spot is the responsibility of the respective municipality. Various microorganisms enter rivers through wastewater discharges, erosion processes, runoff from sealed surfaces, agricultural and natural land runoff, industrial and commercial discharges, and waterfowl.
Outside the Ludwigsburg district, other incidents have occurred. In Ostfildern, a fire took place during which an 18-year-old was injured while trying to put it out. In the Göppingen district, three people were seriously injured in a head-on crash.
In Böblingen, a pensioner was found guilty of groping siblings in court. The registered safe swimming spots in Ludwigsburg district are typically public and monitored bathing areas such as designated lakes and reservoirs; detailed local listings can be found via the Ludwigsburg county's official tourism or environmental websites.
For those seeking hygienically monitored bathing waters, these can be found on the Baden-Württemberg bathing water map. Always prioritise safety and health when enjoying the region's beautiful waterways.
