In a significant development, Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, announced on Friday that the Israeli military and domestic intelligence service, Shin Bet, had carried out an operation resulting in the killing of Abu Obaida, the spokesperson for the armed wing of Hamas.

However, Hamas has not yet confirmed Abu Obaida's death. The civil defense controlled by Hamas reported an attack on the Rimal neighborhood in the west of the city of Gaza on Saturday, but no official statement has been made regarding Abu Obaida's status.

Abu Obaida, a well-known representative of Hamas, was always veiled in public appearances and video messages. The Rimal neighborhood, once an affluent area before the war, was the target of the attack, with a residential building being hit. The attack resulted in at least seven deaths.

Israel has a history of targeting high-ranking Hamas leaders and commanders. In the past, they have killed Yahya al-Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Mohammed Deif. The most recent high-ranking Hamas leader killed by the Israeli military was Mohammad Sinwar, the military chief of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, whose death was confirmed by Hamas in 2023. More recent reports mention the Israeli claim of killing Abu Obeida, but his death has not been confirmed by Hamas as of early September 2025.

Rumours about the death of Hamas's spokesperson have been circulating, but Hamas has urged the public not to spread such rumours without confirmation. There are ongoing allegations of psychological warfare being conducted by Israel.

Hamas is often accused by some family members of hostages of living off the suffering of the Palestinians. The situation remains tense, and updates are expected from both sides.
