Port of Hamburg Sees Significant Growth in Container Handling

The Port of Hamburg has experienced a remarkable boost in container handling, with a significant increase of 9.3 percent to 4.2 million standard containers (TEU), as revealed in the latest statistics.

This growth can be attributed to the influx of new liner services introduced by companies like Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, and COSCO in the first half of 2025. The main markets fueling this economic growth are China and Southeast Asia in the Far East, while in the Baltic Sea region, Poland and the Baltic states are key drivers.

The increase in container handling has also led to a 3.6 percent rise in sea freight handling compared to the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by the Far East and Baltic Sea regions, with the Far East accounting for around 11 percent to 1.8 million TEU, and the Baltic Sea seeing a substantial 21 percent increase to 734,000 TEU.

Imports in container handling grew by 11.6 percent, while exports grew by a more modest 6.9 percent. India, China, and Malaysia were the most important growth markets in Asia for the Port of Hamburg.

In addition to these growth figures, the Port of Hamburg has regained market shares from major western ports in the first half of 2025, with 0.7 percent more container ships calling at the port compared to the previous year.

The Port of Hamburg's expansion has received almost two billion Euros, and the Federal Government has invested 400 million Euros in Shipping and Ports. This investment is part of an international boost for Hamburg Port, as it continues to solidify its position as a major player in the global shipping industry.

Lastly, the number of large container ships (over 10,000 TEU) has increased significantly in the Port of Hamburg, contributing to its growing importance in the global shipping landscape. The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has also significantly increased its turnover and operating result compared to the previous year, but no new facts about these figures were provided.
