How to Create a Glass-Etched Paperweight: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a beautiful glass-etched paperweight can be a rewarding DIY project. Here's a simple guide to help you get started.

Materials Needed - Glass block - Etchall Etching Creme - Etchmask Transfer Tape - Etchmask - Masking tape - Scissors - Lint-free cloth - Isopropyl alcohol - Ruler - Weeding tools - Squeegee - Cricut Design Space (for designing the SVG) - Latex gloves (optional)

Preparation

  1. First, ensure that your glass block is indeed glass and not crystal, as Etchall Etching Creme cannot etch on crystal.
  2. Clean the glass block thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol for best results before etching.

Designing the Stencil

  1. Jon J Muth, an artist who developed a glass etching process, has generously provided a free SVG design for a glass-etched paperweight. You can download it and use Cricut Design Space to size the design to a width of 2 1/2 inches.
  2. Using permanent vinyl as the adhesive vinyl, create your stencil in Cricut Design Space.

Applying the Stencil

  1. Centre the stencil on the glass block and press it into place using a squeegee tool.
  2. Apply a thick layer of Etchall Etching Creme over the stencil.

Etching the Glass

  1. Let the etching cream sit on the glass for the recommended time, then rinse under warm water to wash off remaining etching cream.

Removing the Stencil

  1. Before peeling back the stencil and painter's tape, ensure that all of the etching cream has been washed away.

Finishing Touches

  1. Dry the glass block with a paper towel or hand towel.
  2. Etched glass can be washed with any household glass cleaner. If needed, you can use isopropyl alcohol to clean glass-etched items.
  3. Latex gloves may be worn while washing the glass for protection.
  4. Once the etching cream has been washed off and the glass is clean, you can enjoy your beautiful new glass-etched paperweight. The cream can also be scraped off and reused.
  5. Glass-etched items can be washed in a dishwasher after all etching cream has been washed off.
