Harmonious duo embarks on a fantasy in Harz, but finds themselves turbulently dragged into a horror story instead
In the heart of Germany's Harz mountain range, a couple from Hildesheim, Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus, found their dream home - a Grabenhaus in the Upper Harz. This traditional Harz building, named "Rose", was the perfect base for their outdoor sports activities like climbing and whitewater rafting.
The Harz region, known for its dense forests, picturesque landscapes, and idyllic villages, was a perfect fit for the adventurous duo. However, their journey was not without its hurdles.
Initially, renting out the holiday apartment proved more complex than anticipated, with additional requirements for homeowners. The Grabenhaus, typical of the former mining region of the Harz, offered enough space for the couple and a rental apartment. But the process was far from straightforward.
One of the first challenges they faced was the unreliable well. The water supply was insufficient to meet their needs, adding to their woes. To tackle this, they considered tapping into the water tank in Altenau, but the Harz's geography presented unknown challenges.
The Grabenhaus also had a three-chamber septic tank that was not registered with the district. The septic tank discharged its wastewater "into nowhere", posing a potential hazard. The fence surrounding the Grabenhaus did not match the actual size of the property, causing further issues.
The access to the Grabenhaus was not on their own land, but on someone else's property. This lack of access rights led to complications, as they had to navigate a private path requiring an annual fee.
The previous owners of the Grabenhaus, the Koch family, had left behind another unexpected challenge - the path leading to the Grabenhaus was a private one, requiring an annual fee.
Modernizing the historic Grabenhaus turned out to be a series of unexpected challenges for the couple. Yet, Anke Brockhaus recalls that the challenge of modernizing the historic building while preserving its character was not their biggest worry.
The Harz region, while beautiful, also has potential hazards for hikers, as there have been reports of disgraceful incidents. Despite these challenges, the Brockhauses remain undeterred, eager to continue their new life in the heart of the Harz.
Their story serves as a reminder that every dream home comes with its own set of challenges, but with perseverance and determination, those challenges can be overcome.
