In a surprising turn of events, Hasbro announced the shuttering of its Sigil 3D virtual tabletop tool. The decision comes after a tumultuous development period, marked by internal rifts and a lack of clear vision from upper management.

The news was first broken by Andy Collins, Sigil's design lead and WOTC game rules specialist, who shared a LinkedIn post detailing the layoffs. Approximately 30 people, including Collins himself, were impacted by the decision.

Initially unveiled in the summer of 2024, Sigil was developed in Unreal Engine 5 to allow players and Dungeon Masters to create customizable, fully 3D maps and environments. It offered a host of features and access to high-quality D&D character models, including Baldur's Gate 3's Astarion and Karlach.

However, the publicly accessible playtest of Sigil, launched last month, was met with criticism for its numerous bugs and user accessibility issues. The playtest was extremely limited compared to the grand vision Wizards had teased for the platform.

Despite the setbacks, Wizards of the Coast plans to transition Sigil into D&D Beyond's virtual tabletop system, Maps. A skeleton crew of remaining Sigil staff will reportedly integrate what remains of Sigil's vision into the Maps VTT system.

There were divisions between Hasbro upper management and the Sigil development team. Reports suggest that upper management allegedly wanted Sigil to be treated less as a virtual tabletop platform and more as a standalone video game. This divergence in vision may have contributed to the project's challenges.

Furthermore, the D&D Beyond team reportedly denied the Sigil team access to internal D&D Beyond data, which further disrupted development.

As for the currently developed extra content for Sigil users, no new information has been released regarding its release at no additional cost. Future plans for Sigil will be announced by Wizards of the Coast as they become available.

This move marks a significant shift in the digital landscape of Dungeons & Dragons, and we will be closely following any new developments in this story.
