Fook Kee Restaurant: A Gem in Kampung Cheras Baru, Kuala Lumpur

Fook Kee Restaurant, nestled in the heart of Kampung Cheras Baru, Kuala Lumpur, is a family-run establishment that has been serving up delicious Cantonese and siu chow cuisine for some time now. The restaurant, which operates out of a house with a converted dining room, is open daily from 12-9pm, with the exception of Wednesdays.

The matriarch takes orders, while the patriarch works his magic in the kitchen. Fook Kee prides itself on offering six different types of fish, prepared 10 different ways, with the signature being tilapia (RM60/kg) done "Vietnamese" style. This mild, warming, sweet-ish curry is thick with aromatics and a light touch of coconut milk, making it a must-try for any curry lover.

For those who prefer something on the land, the braised lamb (RM42) is a great option. Despite being a meat that can sometimes be divisive, Fook Kee's version is balanced and can be enjoyed by those who are usually not fond of lamb. As an alternative to the braised soft-shell turtle, a dish that Fook Kee's claypot dishes are renowned for, the braised lamb offers a dark, sticky, spiced flavor profile that is sure to satisfy.

The menu at Fook Kee is not just about the main dishes. The pork tendons fried with French beans (RM33) is a texturally playful dish, with crunchy legumes and springy, snappy tendons. The signature water spinach (RM20) is another popular choice, featuring a mountain of crispy garlic and dried shrimp.

One dish that should not be missed is the sweet and sour pork (RM33). The craggy, crunchy pebbles of battered pork are coated in a tangy sauce that is the perfect balance of sweet and sour.
