Heated competition between Áras candidates as Sinn Féin convenes for a gathering
The Irish Presidential election, scheduled to be held before 11 November as Michael D Higgins' term comes to an end, has sparked a flurry of activity within political parties. Sinn Fein, one of the major players, is currently in the midst of strategic discussions regarding their participation and potential candidates.
In the past, Sinn Fein's presidential candidates have not fared well, with the last time they fielded a candidate resulting in a disappointing 6% of the vote. However, this election could present a new opportunity, with several credible candidates emerging within the party.
John Finucane, a formidable campaigner known for his performance in TV debates, is one such contender. His potential candidacy has garnered significant attention, and the symbolism of a Sinn Fein leader moving into Áras an Uachtaráin would be a significant boost for the party. The campaign for Irish unification would also gain a new chief cheerleader.
However, there are risks associated with Sinn Fein fielding its own candidate. The cost of the campaign and the potential for poor election results are concerns that the party is carefully considering. Some within the party might find it difficult to convince Finucane to run for president, adding to the complexity of the decision.
Other potential candidates being considered by Sinn Fein include Michelle O'Neill, Donegal TD Pearse Doherty, and Belfast North MP John Finucane. If McDonald, the current party leader, decides to run, it could be seen as a perfect exit ramp from the political stage after a second failed attempt in the last year's election to enter government.
Meanwhile, other parties are also gearing up for the election. Fianna Fáil is still considering its choices, with academic Deirdre Heenan and former Social Democratic and Labour Party leader Colum Eastwood being mentioned as potential candidates. Catherine Connolly, an independent TD, is hoping to secure the backing of Sinn Fein and other left-wing parties for her presidential bid.
Notably, entrepreneur Peter Casey, who came second in 2018, is seeking the nomination again. Celebrity candidates such as Riverdance star Michael Flatley and MMA fighter Conor McGregor have also expressed interest in running, although McGregor has since withdrawn from the race.
As the election date approaches, the Sinn Fein Ard Chomhairle will study the findings of an internal consultation on the election strategy. The leadership is planning to meet to discuss the way forward, with the decision likely to have significant implications for the political landscape of Ireland.
