The gathering comes amidst escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with reports of a downed Ukrainian drone setting fire to a power transformer station in the Russian region of Krasnodar. Europe believes that security guarantees for Ukraine are of utmost importance, and previous assurances of some form of American presence were given by former US President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that Europe has a plan for sending troops to Ukraine. This announcement follows a surprising solidarity visit by Jens Spahn of the CDU/CSU and Matthias Miersch of the SPD to Ukraine.

Elsewhere, a man was arrested in Sydney after driving his car into the gate of the Russian consulate. The incident, which occurred on Monday, saw the man's car, with two shattered windows, parked near the Russian flag on the consulate's lawn. The New South Wales Police Force was called to the scene due to a vehicle parked illegally in the consulate's driveway.
