Heavy-duty vehicle hydrogen stations expansion in Europe: Air Liquide and Totalenergies collaborate for over 100 station network construction
TotalEnergies' President Marketing & Services, Thierry Pflimlin, has voiced his support for a new joint venture between the company and Air Liquide. The partnership, announced on February 2, 2023, in Paris, France, aims to develop a network of over 100 hydrogen stations for heavy-duty vehicles across Europe.
The partners plan to establish this joint venture in 2023, subject to contractual documentation and regulatory approvals. The stations, under the TotalEnergies brand, will be located on major strategic corridors, focusing on major European road corridors to facilitate access to hydrogen for goods transportation.
TotalEnergies will bring its expertise in the operation and management of stations networks and the distribution of energies to BtoB customers, while Air Liquide will contribute its expertise in technologies and mastery of the entire hydrogen value chain to the joint venture.
The joint venture will invest, build, operate, procure hydrogen from the market, and dispense it to transport customers. This move is expected to contribute to the decarbonization of road transportation in Europe and the emergence of a low-carbon society.
The partners are pioneers in hydrogen mobility and believe in the necessity to start building a network now. They aim to deploy these hydrogen stations in France, Benelux, and Germany in the coming years. The Grandpuits Zero Crude Platform of TotalEnergies recently became the subject of a partnership for the production of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen, further strengthening the companies' common efforts to decarbonize mobility.
Hydrogen offers clear benefits for heavy-duty mobility, according to Matthieu Giard, Vice President and Executive Committee Member of the Air Liquide Group, supervising the Hydrogen activities. The joint venture will benefit from the unique know-how and technologies of Air Liquide, with the goal of building a heavy-duty hydrogen network for vehicles across Europe.
Currently, there is no publicly available information about which European countries have been selected for the partnership's hydrogen station construction. However, the partners are planning to produce green hydrogen for their European refineries, although a specific country list for such a network of stations has not been published yet.
The joint venture is expected to contribute significantly to the decarbonization of road transportation in Europe and the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy.
