Heavy metal band Slipknot's track officially surpasses one billion streams on Spotify.
Slipknot's "Duality" Turns 17: A Look Back at the Iconic Single and Its Album
Seventeen years ago, on May 4, 2004, Slipknot released "Duality," the first single from their third album, Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses. This heavy metal anthem, now streamed over one-billion times on Spotify, marked a significant milestone in the band's career.
The production of Vol. 3 took place at two locations: Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, California, where Slipknot's studio recordings were made, and The Mansion in Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles, California, where the band spent the better part of 2003 and 2004 recording the album. The production was overseen by producer Rick Rubin.
"Duality" was a long-awaited single for Slipknot fans, being their first since "My Plague" in 2002. The music video for the song, featuring the band playing to 350 marauding fans in a Des Moines, Iowa home, added to its appeal.
The family who owned the house where the video was shot sought between $300,000 and $500,000 from Slipknot due to damage. However, Guitarist Jim Root stated that the family had planned to remodel the house regardless, and Record label Roadrunner handed them $50,000 as a settlement.
The release of "Duality" was a precursor to the album's success. Vol. 3 has gone Platinum in Canada (twice), the US, the UK, Denmark, Australia, and New Zealand. The album, which reached number one on the UK Rock & Metal chart, has also been certified Platinum in multiple markets.
Vol. 3 marked a turning point for Slipknot, with Jim Root's involvement increasing significantly as he quit drinking. During the first three months in the studio, everyone was frequently intoxicated, and not working together effectively. However, with Root's increased involvement, the music started to come together.
Last year, Slipknot teased the release of a single called Long May You Die, but it has yet to be released. As of now, Slipknot may be working on new music, but they are currently enjoying some time off from the road.
Perhaps the most controversial aspect of Vol. 3 is the release of Look Outside Your Window, an album of downtempo rock songs recorded simultaneously to All Hope Is Gone. Percussionist Shawn 'Clown' Crahan argues that this album is not a Slipknot release. Regardless, "Duality" and Vol. 3 remain significant milestones in Slipknot's career, marking a period of growth and success for the band.
