Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand causes destruction, with the bridge on the Jyotirmath-Malari highway collapsing, isolating several villages from the rest of the region.

In the early hours of this morning, a bridge collapse occurred along the Dhauliganga river, a tributary of the Alaknanda, in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. The incident, which happened around 2 am, was due to heavy monsoon rainfall.

The bridge collapse has disrupted traffic on several highways, causing the closure of the Badrinath and Kedarnath-Chamoli routes. The affected area, known to be prone to flooding during heavy monsoon spells, has also resulted in the blocking of the Badrinath National Highway at Bhanirpani and Paaglanala due to debris.

Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as a result of the bridge collapse. However, the incident has cut off access to more than a dozen villages in the Niti Valley, located near the India-China border.

In the last 24 hours, Dehradun received 68.4 mm of rainfall, exceeding the normal for this time of the year. Haridwar recorded an even higher amount, with 125.3 mm of rainfall, also surpassing the usual rainfall for this period. The hill districts of Tehri and Pauri Garhwal have also received over 45 mm of rainfall.

Efforts are currently underway with heavy machinery to restore traffic on the blocked highways and to carry out restoration work on the washed-away bridge. The Kund-Chamoli highway, linking Kedarnath to Chamoli, remains shut after a landslide near Bairagana.

There is no information available about who may have been responsible for maintaining the bridge on the Jyotirmath-Malari Road that collapsed during the heavy rains in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district.

As the monsoon season continues, it is crucial for authorities to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the public and to minimise the impact of such incidents on transportation and remote communities.
