Heavy rains on the way
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall across Thailand from Sunday to Wednesday, following ongoing monsoon conditions resulting from Tropical Storm Kajiki. The dissipated tropical storm, now a low-pressure area, has contributed to heavy downpours in the North of Thailand, causing concern and necessitating close monitoring of the situation.
According to the TMD, the rate of rain is predicted to jump to between 60 and 80% until Wednesday, with additional downpours forecast for the North and Northeast regions of Thailand. The heavy rainfall has already fed into the Ping, Yom, and Nan river basins, and the authorities are keeping a close eye on the developing situation in the next couple of days.
Unfortunately, the heavy rainfall has led to several incidents. A landslide in Moo 1 and Moo 18 of a village in Chiang Mai killed four people and damaged at least eight houses. The place where the landslide occurred is not identified in the provided search results, and the authorities in Chiang Mai are searching for five residents reported missing following the incident. In Mae Hong Son, residents in Ban Pha Bong Tai, Muang district, are being assisted by police and rescuers due to flash floods triggered by runoff from Pha Bong mountain.
Moreover, more than 50 residents from Ban Pang Ung in Chiang Mai's Mae Chaem district have been evacuated due to the risk of further landslides. Parts of the North and Northeast regions are already inundated, according to reports, and more than 50 residents from Ban Pang Ung are currently staying at a shelter.
The ECMWF report indicates that the influence of the low-pressure area over the upper part of the country and the monsoon trough moving through the northeastern region and the Central Plains will cause downpours from Thursday to next Friday. Furthermore, the monsoon trough is expected to turn into a severe low-pressure area over the South China Sea, intensifying the southwestern monsoon over the coast from Sunday to Wednesday.
The TMD has posted a warning on its Facebook account, citing the report from the 15-day rain chart by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The warning urges the public to be cautious and stay updated on the weather conditions, especially those living in the North and Northeast regions of Thailand.
Roughly half of Bangkok and its neighboring provinces have experienced rain until today, and it is advisable for everyone to take precautions and stay safe during this period of heavy rainfall. The TMD will continue to closely monitor the weather conditions and issue updates as necessary. Stay tuned for further developments.
