New Secretary General Appointed at European Lotteries

The European Lotteries (EL) has announced the appointment of Piet Van Baeveghem as its new Secretary General. Van Baeveghem, an experienced professional with over 25 years of expertise in policy-making and stakeholder engagement, will step into the office later this year on July 1, 2025.

Van Baeveghem has spent a significant part of his career within the lottery sector. He joined the Belgian National Lottery in 2010, serving as its senior public affairs adviser. In March 2013, he was promoted to domain manager of legal and regulatory affairs. His dedication to the sector has been evident, as he has served the lottery industry for almost 15 years.

Van Baeveghem has also been deeply engaged with the EL for many years, having served as executive chair of the EL Legal & Regulatory Working Group. This extensive experience within the EL and the lottery sector made him the perfect candidate for the position of Secretary General.

The EL's new manifesto, which recognizes the rapid changes affecting the lottery and gaming sectors, aligns with Van Baeveghem's vision. The manifesto promotes sustainability and safer gaming among its members, and calls on lottery companies to continue contributing to the public good and retain their unique place in gaming and society.

In addition to the EL's commitment to sustainability and safer gaming, several lottery companies are also emphasizing their commitment to industry standards and customer safety. IGT, for instance, has emphasized its commitment to the highest industry standards and its desire to prioritize its customers' safety. IGT Lottery has also secured the WLA Responsible Gaming Certification, further demonstrating its dedication to responsible gaming practices.

The EL has also certified IGT's Italian subsidiary, IGT Lottery, for the sixth time in a row. This certification is a testament to IGT's ongoing commitment to responsible gaming and its adherence to the EL's standards.

As the new Secretary General, Van Baeveghem is expected to lead the EL in navigating the rapidly changing lottery and gaming sectors while ensuring the continued promotion of sustainability and safer gaming. His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the EL, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on the organization and the lottery industry as a whole.
