Here's Kimi Antonelli's account of his qualifying argument.
In the Formula 1 race at Zandvoort, Kimi Antonelli, the young driver for the unnamed team, narrowly missed qualifying for Q3. The 19-year-old, who celebrated his birthday a few days before the race, ended the qualifying session in 11th place, just 0.021 seconds short of advancing.
Antonelli struggled during the European season, and his performance at Zandvoort was impacted by a crash in the first practice session. This incident seemed to have affected his confidence, as he felt poorly prepared for the qualifying.
The driver admitted that a small mistake in the chicane cost him the crucial time needed to advance to Q3. He also felt he was playing catch-up due to missed short runs during practice sessions.
Despite missing out on Q3, Antonelli is determined to put in a strong performance during the race. The track at Zandvoort makes a poor starting position detrimental for the race, but Antonelli is optimistic about his chances.
Meanwhile, Isack Hadjar is between Max Verstappen and George Russell in P4. Russell, who will be starting from 5th, will be aiming for the podium if he can pass Hadjar quickly. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, sees good chances for his team if Russell can pull off the pass.
Most teams are adopting a 1-stop strategy with medium and hard tires. This strategy could favour those starting from the middle of the grid, such as Russell and Antonelli.
The only significant overtaking spot on the track is the DRS zone on the start-finish straight and turn 1. Antonelli will need to make the most of this opportunity if he wants to move up the ranks.
The pole decision on qualifying Saturday was a McLaren affair, unrelated to Mercedes. Despite this, Antonelli and his team will be focusing on their own performance and strategies to secure a strong finish in the race.
