High Court in Allahabad dismisses petition against Jolly LLB 3 movie
The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition seeking a ban on the release of Akshay Kumar-starrer Jolly LLB 3. The petition, filed by Jay Vardhan Shukla and another, argued that the movie portrays the legal profession in a derogatory manner, causing disillusionment among law students and potentially prejudicing the minds of practicing advocates.
The Division Bench of Justice Sangeeta Chandra and Justice Brij Raj Singh made the decision following a hearing in the case titled Jay Vardhan Shukla And Another v Union of India and 6 Others. The court watched the three official trailers/ teasers of the movie and found nothing objectionable.
However, the court did find substance in the objection raised by the Union of India, represented by Senior Advocate SB Pandey, questioning the maintainability of the plea on the ground that the petitioner had not made any representation to the competent authority against the movie. The petitioner, it was noted, had not approached the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) or the designated statutory authorities empowered to address grievances related to film content prior to filing the petition.
Advocates Rishab Khare and Anadi Chitranshi represented the petitioner, while the Union of India was represented by Senior Advocate SB Pandey. The court also ruled that they do not find anything in the lyrics of the song "Bhai Vakeel Hai" that may interfere with the practice of the legal profession by genuine Advocates.
The trailer and songs of the movie are widely circulated on YouTube and other social media platforms. Despite the rejection of the petition, the court did not rule on the portrayal of the legal profession in the movie Jolly LLB 3. The petitioners have not yet approached any authority as given under The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
