High Court Nominees to Engage in Discussions with Supreme Court Collegium for Allahabad High Court Positions

The Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice BR Gavai, is actively working towards filling vacancies in High Courts across the country, with a particular focus on the Allahabad High Court.

In a recent development, the Collegium has recommended the transfer of three judges, Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh, Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal, and Justice Donadi Ramesh. With these transfers, the vacancy in the Allahabad High Court will come down to 77.

So far, 60 vacancies have been filled in different High Courts, but the Central government is yet to clear the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium for filling vacancies in the Allahabad High Court.

The Allahabad High Court, with a sanctioned strength of 160 judges, is currently operating at half its strength. Each judge in the court is handling an average of 14,623 pending cases, and with a population of 24 crore, the court has 1,155,225 pending cases.

In an effort to address this issue, the Allahabad High Court has sought a response from the State on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition that seeks directions for urgent and time-bound filling of judicial vacancies.

The Supreme Court Collegium is set to hold interactions with 33 candidates, including 20 judicial officers and 13 lawyers, who are in the running for High Court judgeship. These interactions are scheduled to take place on Monday, but the search results do not provide information about which candidate the Collegium will meet for interviews to fill posts in the Allahabad High Court that are not on the Collegium's recommended list.

The PIL petition in the Allahabad High Court highlights the urgent need for filling judicial vacancies, as each judge is currently handling an overwhelming caseload. The petition also emphasizes the importance of ensuring that the court operates at its full strength to deliver justice efficiently and effectively.

The Supreme Court Collegium's push to fill vacancies in the Allahabad High Court is a positive step towards addressing the backlog of cases and ensuring that justice is delivered promptly and fairly. As the Collegium continues its efforts, it is hoped that the Central government will swiftly clear the recommendations made to fill vacancies in the Allahabad High Court and other High Courts across the country.
