In Germany, the German Pension Insurance provides detailed information on the distribution of pensions by monthly payment amount. According to the latest data from 2023, a total of 18,273 individuals in the country received a pension of more than 3,000 euros per month.

The pension amount is calculated using a formula that takes into account several factors. The pension value, set by the federal government, is currently 39.32 Euros. This value is then multiplied by the pension points, which are the most important factor in determining the pension amount. The number of pension points accumulated depends on an individual's income compared to the average annual income of all insured persons, provisionally 50,493 Euros for the year 2025.

The maximum income for which contributions are paid to the pension insurance is 96,600 Euros, which determines the maximum number of pension points that can be accumulated in a year. For the year 2025, this equates to a maximum of 1,768 pension points.

The pension calculation also considers the entitlement points (pension points) and the access factor. The access factor takes into account additions and deductions of a pension, with a factor of 1.0 for those who retire at the regular retirement age of 67 (for those born after 1963).

The pension factor for normal old-age pensions and pensions due to full disability is 1.0. However, pensions due to partial disability have a factor of 0.5.

In 2023, the pension distribution by monthly payment amount was detailed in tables for both the new federal states and the former federal states. For the new federal states, a small fraction of East German retirees received a pension of over 3,000 euros gross: 2,933 men and 283 women. In contrast, a small group of West German retirees also fell into this category, with 14,284 men and 773 women receiving over 3,000 euros gross.

It's worth noting that the pension amount varies greatly, with some people living on less than the average and others receiving more. For instance, in 2023, male retirees with at least 35 years of work received an average of 1,800 Euros gross per month, while female retirees received only 1,333 Euros gross.

To receive a pension of over 3,000 euros, one must primarily earn above average and contribute to the pension fund for a long time. The exact number of years needed can vary depending on the individual's income and the pension type factor, which also influences the pension amount.

By the end of 2023, exactly 18,273 people received a pension of over 3,000 euros per month, with 17,217 men and 1,056 women among them. This highlights the diversity in the German pension system, with a range of outcomes based on individual circumstances and contributions.
