High School Football Match Between Shady Side Academy and Clairton Delayed Due to "Rare Injuries"
Shady Side Academy Postpones Football Game Against Clairton Due to Injuries
In a move prioritising the safety of its student-athletes, Shady Side Academy has postponed its football game against Clairton this week. The decision comes as nearly 20 of the academy's 40 players are sidelined with injuries, making it impossible for the team to field a competitive roster.
Head coach Andrew Geisler, who emphasised the unprecedented number of injuries, stated that the team's 2-0 start speaks volumes to the team's character. However, he added that nothing is more important to him than the student-athletes' safety.
Clairton, currently on a winning streak, has already defeated Shady Side Academy last season with a score of 50-0. The Steelers have also won against Serra Catholic with a score of 79-0 in their latest game.
Clairton head coach Wayne Wade understands scheduling can be difficult, but expressed disappointment about the postponement. "We were looking forward to playing Shady Side Academy," he said. "It's unfortunate we won't have the opportunity this season."
The postponed game has created some social media buzz, with some criticising Shady Side Academy's decision not to play. However, Clairton School District has distanced itself from the negative rhetoric, stating that the page is not affiliated with the district.
KDKA reached out to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League for comment but did not receive a response on Thursday. If the game cannot be rescheduled for later this season, it will be ruled a forfeit in favor of Clairton, as previously mentioned.
With the postponement, Shady Side Academy's head coach Andrew Geisler highlighted the importance of focusing on the recovery and well-being of the injured players. "Our priority is to ensure our student-athletes are healthy and ready to compete when the time is right," he said.
As the season progresses, both teams will continue to focus on their respective preparations, with hopes of a potential rescheduled match in the future.
