High School Student Suffers Skull Fracture in Locker Room, Parents Speculate About Unreported Details and His Memory Loss Incident
In the small town of Tuscumbia, Alabama, a tragic incident occurred on August 19 that has left the community in shock. August Borden, a 15-year-old football player, was left fighting for his life after an incident at Deshler High School.
According to Robert Bissell, the director of federal programs for Tuscumbia City Schools, the incident occurred while August and his teammates were walking from the weight room to the locker room. August's mother, Kristen Van Devender, a 47-year-old photographer, was informed to come get him by another football mom around 3:45 p.m.
Upon reaching the school, Kristen found a chaotic scene with a police officer, firetrucks, and an ambulance. August was inside the school, screaming in pain. Despite the gravity of the situation, there were no security cameras in the location where the incident occurred.
August was transported to Children's of Alabama, but his parents couldn't fly with him due to lack of space in the helicopter. His family believes that he was struck, despite being told it was a fall.
The school district has said little about the incident, citing an ongoing investigation. However, Robert Broussard, the District Attorney, stated that investigators are focused only on witnesses and evidence. The case has been handed over to the Franklin County Juvenile Probation Office, with help from the Madison County District Attorney's Office. The local District Attorney recused himself due to possible connections, which is "not uncommon" in smaller districts.
Drew, August's stepfather, was contacted and told to get to the school immediately. Three days after his injury, Deshler's football team played a game, but there was "no mention of August" - no kneel down, no silence, just business as usual. Drew posted photos of August in the hospital, pleading for anyone with information to come forward.
The post went viral, spreading across the country. August suffered severe injuries including a serious concussion, fractures beneath both eyes, and a skull fracture behind his sinus cavity. No students have been disciplined, and officials say they won't act until all the facts are clear.
As the community waits for answers, they are rallying around August and his family, praying for his recovery and justice.
