Highlighting the Individual: Bryan Redmond, the Focus of Attention

Bryan Redmond, a second-year student in the Neuroscience Graduate Program and a fourth-year student in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, is making waves in the medical community. His goal is to not only excel academically but also to educate and inspire future generations, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Redmond's medical education program, which he has been developing, focuses on discussing topics like careers in medicine, nutrition, and preventable diseases. The program uses the students' affinity for sports as a scaffold for interest in careers in health care and options in higher education.

Malik Sams, M.D., Lynette Froula, M.D., and Walter Larkin, Jr., CEO of UPREP, are mentors for Redmond's program. The program does not repeat any of Redmond's research interests or goals, but rather aims to educate students and teach them how to be better persons, leading to them becoming better citizens and living more meaningful lives.

Redmond's research interest lies in the visual deficits experienced following optical lobe stroke. He is currently working in the lab of Krystel Huxlin, Ph.D., investigating whether neurons in undamaged areas of the visual circuit can be stimulated to restore vision following stroke.

In November 2021, Redmond was selected as a Diverse Medical Scholars Program Fellow by the United Health Foundation/National Medical Fellowships organization. The honor includes a $7,000 grant that will support a medical education program developed by Redmond in partnership with University Preparatory Charter School for Young Men (UPREP).

Redmond is also supported by a scholarship from the Diverse Medical Scholars Program of the United Health Foundation/National Medical Fellowships for a medical education course he co-developed with a colleague. The specific course name and co-developer's name are not available in the search results.

Redmond graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana with a B.S. in psychology. He is motivated to use his academic experience to help create a pipeline for future scientists of color. Redmond is one of the original members of the Neuroscience Diversity Commission and is compelled to alleviate systemic issues persons of color face in science and to improve the experience of those who come after him.

Redmond believes that early education can help reformation of issues observed in the community. His ultimate goal is to develop a way to help patients with visual stroke recover their vision.
