Hiking Fad Often Violates Trails' Respectful Conduct, Irks Fellow Outdoor Enthusiasts

Hiking trails offer a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, immersing ourselves in serene, natural environments. However, it's crucial that we respect these spaces and the wildlife they harbour.

Recent incidents of plastic items being left on hiking trails have raised concerns among hikers and environmentalists alike. Items such as plastic animals, troll-house ornaments, and holiday decorations are not considered good hiking etiquette. These objects can harm wildlife, spread invasive species, and degrade the outdoor experience for everyone.

Plastic items degrade slowly and can be mistaken for food by animals, potentially causing harm or even death. Moreover, they can disrupt ecosystems, introduce pollutants, and diminish the beauty of the area.

JD Tanner, from the Leave No Trace organisation, emphasises the importance of adhering to the Leave No Trace principles. These principles include taking nothing but pictures and leaving nothing but footprints. In other words, hikers should pack out their trash and do their best not to disturb natural areas.

Many hikers agree that it is important not to disturb these natural environments with personal handiworks. Some hikers, like u/Toddstar70 and u/bentbrook on Reddit, have expressed disapproval of DIY displays on hiking trails.

Instead, less invasive alternatives to disrupting nature with plastic ornaments include pinning notes on community boards and sharing nature photography and art on social media platforms. Teaching kids the Leave No Trace principles can help them become good stewards of nature as they grow older.

Inconsiderate behaviour towards nature can have far-reaching consequences. It is not just about the aesthetic appeal of the trails, but also about maintaining the health and balance of the ecosystems we enjoy.

So, the next time you're out on a hiking trail, remember to leave no trace. Let's work together to preserve and protect our beautiful natural spaces for future generations to enjoy.
