Historic fire remission in Hermsdorf remains on alert status
The historic stable of the Hermsdorf fire station, a notable ensemble with the fire station itself, is facing an uncertain future due to significant renovation costs and limited funds. The responsibility for the preservation and maintenance of the building lies with the Caritas organization, which is currently reviewing possible development potentials and engaging in discussions with the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office.
In Q4 2022, the stable was inspected by the lower and upper monument protection authorities, BIM, and other entities, revealing substantial structural damage. This damage necessitates renovation of the roof, façade, and heating system, as well as the complete replacement of windows and doors.
The federal government's monument conservation special program only covers half of the renovation costs, leaving the other half to be borne by the owner. Councilwoman Korinna Stephan is advocating for the preservation of the building and exploring further funding opportunities. A pledge of 985,000 euros has been made so far.
However, the project currently has a low priority, and there is a risk that allocated funding may go unused. The stable does not meet the current fire station size requirements, offering only 328 square meters of usable area compared to the required 628 square meters. This has led to the youth fire brigade having to move to Lübars due to lack of space at Hermsdorf Fire Station.
Temporary weather protection is currently in place to prevent further damage, and the encased construction is being used as a dry shelter by wash bears. Despite these challenges, the preservation of the historic stable remains necessary to maintain the ensemble character with the fire station.
Financing discussions are ongoing, and a decision on the further use of the historic building is expected to take several months. The future of the old fire station remains open for now, as the community waits for a decision that will shape the preservation of this significant piece of local history.
