The city of Göttingen has announced the closure of its historic Old Town Hall, effective immediately, due to a persistent woodworm infestation. The treatment, which is expected to last for four weeks starting early January, will involve the use of poisonous gas and the sealing of all building openings with foil.

Despite the ongoing infestation, the Old Town Hall continues to house a registry office, a restaurant, and rooms used by Göttingen Marketing GmbH. However, these facilities will be closed during the treatment and subsequent ventilation period.

The estimated cost of treating the woodworm infestation, including the use of foil for sealing, is around 75,000 euros. The city of Göttingen will be responsible for the execution of the treatment.

Woodmeal traces from the speckled bark beetle have been found at two additional locations in the large hall of the Old Town Hall. This discovery underscores the need for immediate action to eradicate the pest.

Once the treatment is complete, the indoor air of the Old Town Hall will be ventilated. A measurement will be taken before the Old Town Hall is reopened to ensure the safety of its occupants and visitors.

The Old Town Hall, a significant historical landmark in Göttingen, has been a hub of activity, hosting various events and services. Its temporary closure is a necessary step towards preserving its structural integrity and ensuring its continued use for future generations.

The city of Göttingen encourages the public to stay informed about the progress of the treatment and the reopening of the Old Town Hall. Updates will be provided as they become available.
