Historic peace agreement signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, mediated by the United States.
The United States played a significant role in brokering a historic peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan, aiming to end nearly four decades of conflict and tensions over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh. The deal was signed at the White House by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, and US President Donald Trump in August 2025.
The agreement includes commitments from both countries to stop fighting, open up diplomatic relations, and respect each other's territorial integrity. Azerbaijan took back full control of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2023 in a military offensive, leading to the displacement of almost all of the region's remaining 100,000 ethnic Armenians to Armenia.
The peace deal also addresses a long-standing issue for Azerbaijan: the establishment of a transit corridor. According to the White House, this corridor will facilitate greater exports of energy and other resources in the region. The transit corridor will run through the South Caucasus and will be named after Donald Trump. The United States has been granted exclusive development rights to the transit corridor.
The transit corridor established by the peace deal will connect Azerbaijan and its autonomous Nakhchivan exclave, which had previously been isolated due to the conflict. The demand from Azerbaijan for a transit route to Nakhchivan had hindered peace talks in the past.
Trump stated that the three leaders had an "extensive" conversation and signed "voluminous documents" related to the peace deal. He also commented that "they're going to be friends for a long time." The peace deal, if it holds, aims to write a great new history, as described by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The peace deal includes a letter requesting the dissolution of the Minsk Group, a mediation body under the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. This move suggests a shift in geopolitical influence in the South Caucasus, as Russia's influence in the region has drastically weakened in the past several years, particularly due to its war against Ukraine.
Both leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan have praised Donald Trump and have nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have also made similar nominations. Trump stated that the peace deal is a success and a "chapter of peace," as described by Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
As part of the peace deal, US President Donald Trump announced the lifting of restrictions on US military cooperation with Azerbaijan. This move is expected to further strengthen the relationship between the two nations. The details of the agreement have not yet been released, but the hope is that this historic peace deal will mark the beginning of a new era of peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus.
