SV Elversberg Soars to the 2nd Bundesliga: Horst Steffen's Legacy

After an incredible journey, SV Elversberg has secured promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, marking a momentous milestone in the club's history. This leap forward comes just a year after the team's triumphant victory in the 3rd Liga and the Regionalliga title in the 2021-2022 season.

Horst Steffen, the man who steered the team through these triumphs, has expressed his gratitude towards SV Elversberg and everyone who supported him during his tenure. Steffen took over the reins in October 2018 when the team was struggling in 11th place in the Regionalliga Südwest. His leadership transformed the team, guiding them to the 3rd Liga and, now, the 2nd Bundesliga.

Steffen's move to the Bundesliga fulfils a long-held dream for the dedicated coach. His departure from SV Elversberg, after nearly seven and a half years at the helm, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the club. Steffen is leaving to take up the coaching role at Bundesliga side Werder Bremen.

During his time at SV Elversberg, Steffen stood on the sidelines for 2,404 days and 257 games. His achievements have left big shoes to fill, as the club searches for his successor for the 2025/2026 season, with Thomas Stamm stepping up to take the reins.

Sporting director Ole Book acknowledged Steffen's significant impact on SV Elversberg's success. Under Steffen's guidance, the team finished the 2018-2019 season with the best Regionalliga record in the club's history and a fourth-place finish. In the following two seasons, SV Elversberg narrowly missed out on promotion to the 3rd Liga, finishing as runners-up and then as third-placed.

In the last 2nd Liga season, SV Elversberg finished in third place and qualified for the promotion/relegation playoffs. At one point during the season, the team even led the 2nd Liga table. Book expressed respect for Steffen's decision to move to the Bundesliga. He also stated that Steffen has represented the club's values both internally and externally.

Looking back on his time at SV Elversberg, Steffen expressed fond memories. He thanked the club, the fans, and everyone who supported him during his tenure. As he steps into a new challenge at Werder Bremen, Steffen leaves behind a legacy that will be hard to match. The identity of his successor at SV Elversberg remains unknown, but one thing is certain: the bar has been set high, and the new coach will have big shoes to fill.
