Slovenia Secures Impressive Win Over Belgium in EuroBasket 2025
Slovenia delivered a dominant performance against Belgium in EuroBasket 2025, securing an 86-69 victory. The team's success was evident in the paint, where Slovenia outscored Belgium 40-18 and out-rebounded them 43-31.
The star of the show was Luka Doncic, who recorded a triple-double with 26 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. Doncic's all-around brilliance was instrumental in Slovenia's victory, a feat that has only been achieved by a select group of players in EuroBasket history, including Mateusz Ponitka, Rares Mandache, Toni Kukoc, and Stojko Vrankovic.
Slovenia's coach, Aleksander Sekulic, highlighted Doncic's focus and leadership throughout the game. Teammate Alen Omic added that the triple-double was inevitable due to the responsibility Doncic carries for the national team every summer.
Edo Muric, another member of the Slovenian squad, praised Doncic's performance, stating that it reinforced his belief in Doncic's abilities and the team's ability to play good defense. However, Belgium coach Dario Gjergja expressed a preference for Doncic to score more points in the game.
Emmanuel Lecomte, a guard from Belgium, acknowledged that their team struggled to handle Doncic's presence, leading to foul trouble. Doncic's earlier experiences in the tournament had been marked by frustration, as he scored 34 and 39 points in two narrow defeats.
However, Doncic acknowledged his mistakes in the earlier games and expressed a desire to improve. Slovenia will need more of his all-round brilliance to keep advancing in EuroBasket 2025, as they face Iceland on Tuesday and Israel on Thursday in their remaining group play matches.
The top four teams from each group advance to the knockout stage in Latvia. With their victory over Belgium, Slovenia improved to 1-2 in Group D of EuroBasket 2025. The team's seven players scored at least six points, building a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter.
Doncic's historic triple-double marked the first of his career in the European Basketball Championship. As the tournament progresses, it remains to be seen if Doncic can continue his impressive form and lead Slovenia to further success.
