Historical Placement of the Aces' Unbroken 12-Game Winning Streak in WNBA Records
The Las Vegas Aces are currently on a roll, having won 12 consecutive games in the WNBA. This impressive run places them among a select few teams in league history to achieve such a feat.
The current winning streak began on July 30th, when the Aces defeated the Indiana Fever. Since then, they have held off challenges from teams like Atlanta Dream and Seattle Storm, thanks in part to timely shots from Jewell Loyd and Chelsea Gray, and a standout performance from A'ja Wilson, who scored 34 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and blocked four shots in their latest game.
The Aces' winning streak ties the franchise record set in 2012 when the team was still based in San Antonio. Other WNBA teams that have achieved a winning streak of at least 12 games in a single season include the 1998 Houston Comets, who famously won 18 consecutive games that season, and the 2006 Detroit Shock, who also had a 15-game winning streak. These streaks are among the longest in WNBA history, showing that such long winning runs are rare but have occurred several times.
The Aces' current success has propelled them into second place in the WNBA standings. They are currently 26-14, matching the best record they've had since moving to Las Vegas in 2018.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Conference, the 2016 Minnesota Lynx returned to the Finals for the fifth time in six years, setting up a showdown with the Los Angeles Sparks. The 2016 Finals series went the full five games, ending with Nneka Ogwumike's dramatic game-winner in the final seconds for the Sparks. The Lynx, who had a starting five that rivaled any in league history, consisting of Maya Moore, Sylvia Fowles, Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus, and Rebekkah Brunson, achieved a 13-game win streak, pushing their record to 28-6, the best in the WNBA that season.
In other news, the 2014 Phoenix Mercury had a 16-game winning streak and finished the regular season with a 29-5 record. The Los Angeles Sparks hold the longest single-season winning streak in WNBA history with 18 straight victories, achieved in 2001. The 2010 Seattle Storm combined veteran leadership and superstar talent, with Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird, and Swin Cash leading the team to a 13-game win streak and a 28-6 record, tied for the best in the league that season. They went on to win the Finals, becoming just the second team in WNBA history to finish the postseason undefeated.
Dawn Staley, current coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team, has stated that she would have accepted the New York Knicks job if it had been offered to her. The 2012 Silver Stars entered the playoffs as the No. 3 seed in the West, but were swept by the Sparks in the first round. The 2012 San Antonio Silver Stars finished the regular season with a 21-13 record, highlighted by a 12-game midseason win streak that matched the best in franchise history.
With four regular-season games left, the Aces have three of those games being played at home. They will be looking to extend their winning streak and secure a top spot in the WNBA standings as the playoffs approach.
