Summer Holidays Draw to a Close, Causing Traffic Congestion

As the summer holidays come to an end in various regions, a surge in travel is expected, leading to increased traffic in several parts of Europe.

In Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the holidays will last for an additional two weeks, resulting in lively traffic in the south. On the contrary, holidays will conclude in Hamburg, Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schleswig-Holstein, the central Netherlands, Burgenland, Lower Austria, and Vienna, causing return waves and late starters.

This combination of return traffic and late starters increases the risk of traffic jams, particularly in southern Germany. Daily commuter traffic will also contribute to delays towards the end of the holiday season. The same applies to the main connections from Poland, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and Northern Europe.

Problematic routes include the Tauern, Inntal, Rheintal, Pyhrn, Fernpass, Brenner, Karawanken, and Gotthard routes, as well as the motorways leading to the coasts of Italy, Croatia, and France. In Austria, the West Autobahn (A1) near Linz, Salzburg, and Vienna; the Süd Autobahn (A2) around Graz and between Vienna and Guntramsdorf; the Ost Autobahn (A4) between Prater and Schwechat and near the Nickelsdorf/Hegyeshalom border; the Mühlkreis Autobahn (A7) in Linz; the Pyhrn Autobahn (A9) near Graz and the Spielfeld/Sentilj border; and the Tauernautobahn (A10) around Salzburg and Villach are expected to have unusually heavy traffic jams over the last weekend of August.

Long waits can be expected at the crossings A4 Ludwigsdorf (Görlitz), A11 Pomellen (Stettin), A12 Frankfurt (Oder), and A15 Forst. Controls are also carried out on the Polish side, albeit to varying degrees.

Random checks continue at several German borders, particularly at the Austrian border, but also at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, France, and Switzerland. Construction sites, especially towards the end of the holiday season, are particularly prone to congestion.

When returning from Greece or Turkey, several hours of waiting time should be factored in. Holidays are ending in Burgenland, Vienna, and Lower Austria, while they will continue for another week in the other federal states. The ADAC anticipates numerous and long traffic jams on return routes from holiday regions over the last weekend in August.
