In the heart of Hollywood, a legendary actress made a surprising decision to flee the city lights. Kim Novak, renowned for her roles in films like Vertigo, chose to leave Tinseltown, a story that is now the focus of Alexandre O. Philippe's documentary, Kim Novak's Vertigo.

The documentary, hosted at the Venice Film Festival, sheds light on Novak's life beyond the silver screen. During the filming of The Notorious Landlady, Novak had made up her mind that she hated Hollywood and was ready to leave. This decision was accelerated by a mudslide that destroyed her Bel-Air home in 1966.

Novak's departure was also influenced by the unavailability of her favourite sour pickles. A seemingly trivial matter, but one that played a significant role in her decision to leave. Sue Cameron, Novak's longtime manager and confidante, revealed this surprising reason in the documentary.

Initially reluctant to allow Philippe to film her, Novak eventually agreed. The documentary delves into her bipolar diagnosis and its impact on her decisions, her love for animals, painting, and her late equine veterinarian husband. Novak's reaction to the documentary was very emotional and positive.

The world premiere of Kim Novak's Vertigo was a star-studded event. Guillermo del Toro and festival director Alberto Barbera presented a lifetime achievement award to Novak at the Venice Film Festival. The documentary was shown out of competition, a testament to its unique and captivating narrative.

During the filming of the documentary, Novak revealed that she had immediately bought a house, which she named 'Gull House', as an escape from Hollywood. She planned to use it as a weekend retreat whenever she was unhappy in Hollywood.

While shooting The Notorious Landlady, Novak and her sister discovered an extraordinary house near Big Sur. This house became her new home, a far cry from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Novak's departure from Hollywood was finalized when she could not find her favourite pickles, a symbolic end to a chapter in her life.

The Swiss director, Alexandre O. Philippe, is responsible for this intriguing documentary project. Sue Cameron executive produced the film, ensuring a personal and insightful look into the life of one of Hollywood's most enigmatic figures. Kim Novak's Vertigo is a must-watch for anyone interested in the life and career of this iconic actress.
