Home team Mainz 05 suffers defeat at the hands of Cologne in their own stadium.
Mainz 05's unbeaten run in the Bundesliga came to an end on the opening weekend, as they lost 0:1 to Cologne. The home side struggled for ideas in attack, with their captain Nadiem Amiri initiating early attacks with a long ball, but ultimately failing to find the back of the net.
The turning point of the game came just after the hour mark, when Mainz 05's Paul Nebel committed a professional foul on Kaminski, resulting in a red card. Cologne took advantage of the numerical superiority, with former Hoffenheim player Bülter scoring the winner in added time.
Bo Henriksen, the current head coach of Mainz 05, was left to rue the missed opportunities in the game. Jan Thielmann and Kristoffer Lund both missed from promising positions in the second half, while shots from Paul Nebel and Anthony Caci were blocked by Cologne early in the game.
Despite the loss, Mainz 05's striker Nelson Weiper was back in the squad after a disagreement with the club, but he was an unused substitute during the game. Mainz 05 and Weiper are in discussions about an extension of his current contract, which runs until the summer of 2026.
The goalkeeper for Mainz 05 had more work to do after the break, as the home team struggled to contain Cologne's attacks. Kaishu Sanos' shot was deflected and went just wide, but it was not enough to salvage a point for the home side.
Mainz 05's next game will be against Union Berlin, as they look to bounce back from their first loss of the season. Cologne, on the other hand, will be looking to build on their impressive start to the campaign, as they look to establish themselves in the Bundesliga.
