One of the nominees, Suhbat Aflatuni, has been praised by Yevgeny Vodolazkin for his novel "Katehon". Vodolazkin described the book as powerful, with its philosophical, theological, and romantic themes, and highlighted its exploration of the mutual influence and connection between 'small' history – the history of an individual – and 'big' history, world history.
Another nominee, Nadya Alexeyeva, has garnered praise for her novel "Belgrade". Otroshenko commended the rich narrative filled with images and metaphors, while noting Alexeyeva as a young author just beginning her literary career.
Pavel Basinsky spoke about Yevgeny Kremchukov's novel "Fayum", which tells the unusual story of a character with two heads. Basinsky highlighted the novel's exploration of the pursuit of immortality leading to the loss of life.
Alexei Varlamov presented Ilya Kochergin's "Reserve Exit" as a bright and engaging novel that deals with serious topics, and described Ilya Boyashov's "The Sober Hussar" as an engaging and literary diary-like account of current events.
Varlamov also called Andrei Dmitriev's "Veter Troi" a significant contribution to contemporary Russian literature, a sentiment echoed by Otroshenko who referred to it as 'big literature'.
The strength of the shortlist for the Modern Russian Prose nomination was noted by Otroshenko, who expressed his admiration for the diversity and depth of the works. However, Vladimir Tolstoy, the jury chairman, expressed doubts about his decisions for the nomination, adding to the intrigue surrounding the upcoming award ceremony.
The Modern Russian Prose award recognizes works written by contemporary authors in Russian that deeply explore the boundaries of human experience and embody the ideals of humanism. With such a diverse and thought-provoking shortlist, the award ceremony in October is sure to be a literary event not to be missed.
