Honoring the 100th anniversary of Art Pepper, the jazz saxophonist known for his passionate playing style
A century ago today, Art Pepper, a renowned jazz saxophonist, was born. Known for his intensive and creative alto saxophone style, Pepper wrote new style tunes like "Mambo Koyama" and "Landscape" that continue to captivate audiences today.
Pepper discovered his love for music at a young age, starting to play the clarinet at the tender age of 9. He made his debut on record with Stan Kenton at just 18 years old, marking the beginning of a successful career in the jazz industry.
However, Pepper's life was not without its challenges. He developed a dependency on narcotic heroin, leading him to serve time in California prisons. Despite these personal problems, Pepper would drop out of music from time to time.
In the 1970s, after a long hiatus, Pepper made a comeback in the jazz industry. His energy and creativity were showcased by Shorty Rogers on an arrangement of "Over The Rainbow." This comeback was further boosted by his candid autobiography, "Straight Life."
One of Pepper's most significant works is the album "Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section," recorded in 1957, not 1978, and produced by Lester Koenig. There are no records of a 1978 recording of this album, making Koenig the undisputed producer. This album, recorded with Miles Davis' rhythm trio, is an instant classic.
"Landscape" was a staple of Pepper's performances and recordings in his later years. His final studio dates were a close listening duo with George Cables, an African American pianist he bonded with.
Pepper's final performances were described as a "blaze of glory." Tragically, he passed away just two weeks after his last concert in May 1982. Laurie Pepper, his wife and co-author, issued many of his late period live dates, including the one we just heard.
Pepper's legacy continues to live on, inspiring new generations of jazz musicians. His music, marked by its unique style and raw emotion, remains a testament to his passion for jazz and his unwavering dedication to his craft.
