Harald Juhnke Square: A New Cultural Symbol in City-West Berlin

Harald Juhnke, a beloved figure in Berlin's cultural landscape, is now immortalised in a new square named after him in City-West. Born in Charlottenburg in 1929 and raised in Wedding, Juhnke spent five decades as an actor, singer, and showmaster, leaving an indelible mark on the city's cultural life.

The Harald Juhnke Square is not just a tribute to his illustrious career, but also a testament to his close connection with Charlottenburg. The naming of public spaces in honour of significant personalities of Berlin's cultural life is part of a long-standing tradition.

Juhnke is renowned for his versatile talent, with the title "Barefoot or High Heels" reflecting his prowess as a singer. His best-known films include "The Drinker" from 1995, a poignant reflection of his own struggle with alcoholism. Despite his personal battles, Juhnke's spirit, encapsulated in his quote "No appointments and a quick drink", continues to embody the vibrant spirit of Berlin.

The initiative to rename Mohrenstraße to Harald Juhnke Square was driven by the Bezirksverordnetenversammlung (district council) and the Bezirksamt Mitte of Berlin. The decision was officially announced, marking a significant milestone in recognising Juhnke's contributions to Berlin's cultural scene.

Harald Juhnke passed away on April 1, 2005, at the age of 75. Today, his grave at the Waldfriedhof Dahlem stands as one of Berlin's honorary graves, a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to the city's cultural life. The Harald Juhnke Square in City-West serves as a new cultural symbol, a place where Berliners and visitors alike can remember and celebrate Juhnke's legacy.
