Horror enthusiasts, get ready! Ace director Guillermo del Toro is set to sell his chilling collection of horror memorabilia following his successful run at the Venice Film Festival.
In a bid to raise funds following the devastating wildfires that hit Los Angeles earlier this year, acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is auctioning off a significant portion of his vast horror and fantasy collection. The auction, held in partnership with Heritage Auctions, is a three-part sale of items from del Toro's Bleak House archive.
The first auction, featuring over a hundred items, is set to start online on September 26. Among the highlights of this sale are original artwork, signed comic book collections, and rare collectible movie props.
One of the most anticipated lots is the original drawings from Bernie Wrightson's 1983 illustrated edition of "Frankenstein." Del Toro, who described Wrightson's work as a masterpiece, managed to save around 120 items from his collection during the wildfires. These drawings, with starting bids of $200,000 and $100,000 respectively, are expected to draw significant interest from collectors.
Another significant lot is the "Big Baby," Hellboy's massive six-round shotgun, with a starting bid of $50,000. The auction also includes over 40 pieces of memorabilia from the Hellboy films, including Ron Perlman's hero jacket, which has a starting bid of $40,000.
Fans of del Toro's critically-acclaimed film, Pan's Labyrinth, will be excited to see more than a dozen pieces of pre-production art from the movie up for grabs. Raúl Monge's concept sketch of the mill compound is one of del Toro's favourites, while one drawing shows the creature hiding near a stream, and the other depicts Victor Frankenstein in pursuit of his creation.
Del Toro admitted that parting with the illustrations was "pretty brutal," but he hopes that the auction will help support those affected by the wildfires. The auction also includes the "exceedingly hard" to acquire Mike Mignola's "Hellraiser #2" pinup illustration, which has a starting bid of $40,000.
The auction is not just limited to del Toro's collection, as further lots are due next year. The three most important items offered in the auctions, besides Bernie Wrightson's Frankenstein drawings, Pan's Labyrinth, and Hellboy's shotgun "Big Baby," are original artwork from Spider-Man, signed comic book collections, and rare collectible movie props.
For those interested in bidding, the auction can be accessed online from September 26. With such a unique collection up for grabs, this is an opportunity not to be missed for fans of del Toro's work and horror and fantasy enthusiasts alike.
