In a shocking turn of events, Jonathan Creswell, also known as Johnny, has been charged with the murder and rape of Katie Simpson, a renowned showjumper from County Derry, Northern Ireland. Creswell, who was the long-term partner of Katie's sister Christina, was also accused of domestic abuse and attempted murder in a previous case.

On August 3, 2020, Creswell arrived at the home he shared with Katie and Christina in Lettershandoney, only to find Katie hanging from the banister. According to Creswell, he cut Katie down, rushed her to the hospital, and called emergency services. However, Detective Sergeant (DS) Brannigan found inconsistencies in Creswell's account. The rope used was too short for Katie's face to have fallen where Creswell claimed.

Before the court, Creswell maintained his innocence and stated that he had no involvement in Katie's death. However, it later became apparent that his version of events were not truthful. Creswell initially told police that Katie's phone must have fallen out of the car, but later admitted to dumping it in a field near where he kept his horses.

Creswell's history of domestic abuse was revealed in a Sky documentary called Death Of A Showjumper. In 2008, he viciously attacked and tried to kill his then partner Abi Lyle. Lyle, now a successful Olympian who competed for Ireland in Paris last year, has bravely spoken out about her ordeal.

DS Brannigan believes that Creswell killed Katie out of jealousy. Katie had confided in Brannigan that she feared for her life before her death, as revealed by texts from the night before her death. Brannigan also discovered that Katie had a secret boyfriend – Creswell.

Two others, Jill and Hayley, were charged with perverting the course of justice for helping clean Creswell's clothes and withholding information. After Katie's death, Tanya Fowles, a family friend and journalist, contacted police in Derry to flag Abi's assault case. However, the police were dismissive and hostile.

It's important to note that Katie Simpson was a showjumper who had never shown signs of depression. Her death has left the equestrian community in shock, and her friends and family are seeking justice. An autopsy, not done at the time of her death, revealed that she was raped.

Creswell served just three months in prison for common assault instead of more serious charges due to a plea bargain. This raises questions about the justice system and its handling of domestic abuse cases.

As the trial continues, the truth about Katie's death and the events leading up to it are slowly coming to light. The investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to follow this story closely.
