Isha, a Labrador-Golden Retriever mix, has joined the team at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital as a full-time pediatric facility dog. The dog, who was trained and educated by Canine Companions, was carefully selected to meet the specific traits required for working with children in a clinical setting.

Adina Bodolay, Isha's handler and a Child Life Specialist at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital, waited a year to get Isha. Bodolay emphasised the importance of Isha's traits, such as being good around children, calm yet playful, comfortable in clinical settings, not a big barker, and not easily distracted.

Upon Isha's arrival, Marla Knoll, LCSW, expressed her happiness, stating that Isha's presence can make hospital surroundings feel lighter. Shannon MacLaren, LCSW, also believes Isha will add more normalcy to the hospital environment.

Isha's role includes comforting pediatric patients during medical procedures, supporting them during physical therapy, and bringing smiles to everyone she meets. Meghan Ruby, MSW, believes Isha will bring consistent joy and healing to patients at the hospital. Andrea Ferris, MSW, believes Isha has already started helping the hospital staff.

Isha follows a strict diet to maintain her ideal weight and her off-the-job life is disciplined, with strict rules about treats, people food, jumping on the couch, and following commands both at home and in the hospital. Isha lives with Adina Bodolay when not working, sharing space with Bodolay's Shih Tzu-terrier mix, Susie.

Isha's fur, teeth, and nails are meticulously maintained, with nightly brushing, weekly nail trimming, and regular dental care. The Child Life Specialists at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital can be learned more about on their website.

On October 25, Isha had an official welcome party, where hospital staff were excited to meet her. Isha is expected to help not only children but also their parents, as stated by Shannon MacLaren, LCSW. Isha's presence is valued by her colleagues, who find her calming and comforting.

Animals, according to Meghan Ruby, MSW, will help children adjust to being in the hospital. Isha's handler, Adina Bodolay, believes Isha's presence can help normalise the hospital environment for children, making it feel less intimidating. Shannon MacLaren, LCSW, also believes Isha will make a positive impact on the hospital's patients and their families.

Isha's arrival at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital marks a significant step in providing holistic care for pediatric patients. Her calm and playful demeanor, combined with her training and dedication, make her an invaluable addition to the team.
