Hotel disturbance leads to arrest and temporary restrictions in Epping; flares thrown at The Bell hotel
In the town of Epping, Essex Police has put a dispersal order in place, covering the entire town, until 6am on Saturday. The order comes amidst ongoing protests and disorder at The Bell hotel, where asylum seekers have been housed.
The troubles at The Bell hotel began with the arrest of a man, who was later convicted of sexual assault. The man, reportedly a resident at the hotel, was found to have sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl. This incident sparked a series of protests, which have been ongoing.
Over the weekend, there will be a "significant" police presence at The Bell hotel. Anyone identified in connection with the flares used at the hotel on Friday evening will be subject to arrest. Video footage from Friday evening shows a person with their face covered throwing several flares over metal fences in front of the hotel.
The dispersal order gives officers the power to tell people committing antisocial behavior or suspected to be planning it to leave the area or risk arrest. So far, more than 30 people have been arrested near the hotel, and 21 people have been charged with offenses including assaulting a police officer and violent disorder.
One of the individuals arrested was Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, a 41-year-old man. Kebatu was convicted for trying to kiss a 14-year-old, putting his hand on her thigh, and brushing her hair. He also told two teenagers he wanted to "have a baby with each of them".
The government has pledged to end the use of hotels to house asylum seekers by the end of this parliament. Epping Council was denied the chance to appeal after its temporary injunction to stop asylum seekers being housed at the hotel was overturned.
Similar protests have been held in other areas of the UK, reflecting a broader national debate about the handling of illegal small-boat crossings. By the end of August, 29,003 people had arrived by this method.
Chief Superintendent Simon Anslow stated that lighting flares in public spaces poses a clear and real risk to anyone nearby. He urged the public to report any suspicious activity to the police. The ongoing situation in Epping serves as a reminder of the complex issues surrounding asylum seekers and the need for a balanced and safe approach.
