Houthi government officials assassinated by Israeli forces in Yemen
In a series of recent developments, Israel has been making headlines for its military operations in Yemen and Gaza.
Israel's General Staff Chief, Ejal Zamir, has been reportedly involved in the Israeli military operation against the Huthi regime in Yemen's capital, Sanaa. The operation culminated in a Thursday airstrike that claimed the life of the President of the Iran-backed Houthi militia, Ahmed al-Rahaui, and resulted in the deaths of several Houthi ministers and injured members. This attack demonstrates Israel's capability to eliminate key enemies in the region.
The Houthis, who refer to themselves as "Ansar Allah" ("Supporters of God"), are the strongest force in Yemen. They have been launching rocket and drone attacks on Israel since the start of the Gaza war almost two years ago. In response, Israel's military has been targeting locations in Yemen.
Meanwhile, in Gaza, Israel's military has targeted another high-ranking Hamas official, Abu Obeida. This escalation of violence has sparked protests across Israel, with thousands of people demonstrating in Tel Aviv and other cities, calling for an end to the Gaza war and the release of hostages from Hamas' grip.
Yemen expert Ahmed Nagi, from the International Crisis Group, believes that Al-Rahaui's death indicates Israel's improved ability to target Islamist leaders even in distant Yemen. This assessment is further supported by the Mossad's involvement in similar operations, such as the 2024 explosion of manipulated pagers and handheld devices belonging to thousands of Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon.
However, a ceasefire agreement, reportedly already approved by Hamas, will not be on the agenda at the meeting of the Israeli security cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanjahu, set to take place today. This decision has been met with criticism from groups like the Hostages' Forum, who have called for another protest today, stating that the Netanyahu government prefers an endless war over the hostages, ignoring the will of the people.
As the situation in both Yemen and Gaza continues to unfold, it is clear that Israel's actions are part of a complex web of conflict that spans across the Middle East. The international community will be closely watching these developments, hoping for a resolution that brings peace and security to all involved.
