Houthi Leader perished due to an Israeli strike
In a significant development, the president of the Houthi group and several top officials were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Sanaa, Yemen, on Thursday. The targeted facility was reportedly hosting dozens of senior members of the Houthi regime.
The Israeli military confirmed the death of the Houthi president, Ahmed al-Rahaui, and other high-ranking officials in the attack. Al-Rahaui had served as the vice president under his predecessor.
Following al-Rahaui's death, Mohammed Ahmed, a former vice president, was immediately named as the acting president by the Houthi's highest political council. However, it's important to note that the Houthi government is not internationally recognized.
The Saba news agency, which is controlled by the Houthis, reported Ahmed's appointment as acting president. The Houthis, who officially refer to themselves as "Ansar Allah" ("Supporters of God"), have been operating in Yemen since the start of a civil war in 2014.
Abdel Malik al-Huthi, the brother of the group's founder, is the currently practically powerful leader of the Huthi movement. Despite the killing of the Houthi prime minister, Abdel Malik continues to lead the group and declared that the militia will continue its fight against Israel.
The attack also injured several other Houthi members. It's worth mentioning that the Houthis have been targeting commercial ships and Israel since the start of the Gaza war nearly two years ago. The Houthis claim to support the Palestinians in their actions.
The Houthi organization, based in Yemen, is considered the strongest force in the country. Following the airstrike, the Houthi government in Sanaa and the northern parts of Yemen will continue its operations. The civil war in Yemen has been raging for over seven years.
The Israeli military has not issued a formal statement regarding the attack, but it is known that they targeted a facility in Sanaa. The Houthis have not made any official statements about possible retaliation.
