Houthi rebels may have employed cluster munitions in a new operation

In a significant escalation of tensions, a rocket attack was reported on Friday evening targeting the international airport in Tel Aviv. The Houthi militia in Yemen, allies of Iran, are believed to be responsible for the attack, marking the first time they have used rockets containing cluster munitions against Israel.

According to media reports, a rocket fragment hit a town near the airport, triggering sirens in the coastal city of Tel Aviv. The air force representative confirmed that Israel's air defense system, capable of intercepting such munitions, successfully intercepted the rocket in mid-air.

The use of cluster munitions by Iran against Israel violates international humanitarian law, as these weapons are known for their indiscriminate nature and the harm they cause to civilians. Amnesty International reported that Iran used cluster munitions during the 12-day war with Israel in June.

The Houthi militia has been using rockets and drones in their attacks against Israel since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023. This ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has seen a series of attacks and counterattacks, with Israel's air force responding to Houthi attacks with frequent airstrikes on militia targets in Yemen.

It is believed that the Houthi rebels were first equipped with rockets containing cluster munitions before the 12-day war with Israel around 2023. Both the Houthi militia and Hamas in the Gaza Strip share an alliance with Iran. The Houthis have expressed solidarity with the Islamic Hamas in their attacks against Israel.

The incident comes as a reminder of the ongoing tension and potential for escalation in the region. As the conflict between Israel and its neighbours continues, the international community must work towards finding a peaceful resolution to ensure the safety and security of all involved.
