Post-Tropical Cyclone Erin Brings High Risk Rip Currents to Long Island Beaches

Post-Tropical Cyclone Erin has moved farther out to sea, but its effects are still being felt on Long Island. The National Weather Service has issued a warning for possible rip currents along the coast, which is in effect until 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

New York City's Office of Emergency Management is advising swimmers to avoid "red-flagged" beaches where a lifeguard isn't present, as these beaches pose a high risk for rip currents. The warning does not apply to all beaches, however.

Unfortunately, this warning came too late for 59-year-old Ishmoile Mohammed, who drowned at Sailors Haven Beach on Fire Island on Saturday afternoon. Mohammed was rescued by lifeguards at around 2:45 p.m., but despite aid, he was later pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital.

It is uncertain whether swimmers were allowed in the water at Sailors Haven Beach at the time of the incident. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Saturday that swimming will be allowed again at two Long Island state park beaches, including Jones Beach and Robert Moses State Park.

Despite the reopening of Long Island beaches to swimming, the warning from the National Weather Service is still in effect. Swimmers are advised to exercise caution and heed the warnings issued by the authorities.

In a tragic turn of events, Mohammed's drowning was caused by a rip current that pulled him west along the shoreline. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by the ocean, even after a storm has passed.

Our thoughts go out to Mohammed's family and friends during this difficult time. It is important to remember to always swim safely and follow the advice of lifeguards and authorities when visiting the beach.
