Hurricane Kiko poses threat, triggering emergency state in Hawaii
Hurricane Kiko Moves Towards Hawaii: State of Emergency Declared
Hurricane Kiko, currently a Category 3 storm, is heading towards Hawaii, prompting the state's acting governor, Sylvia Luke, to declare a state of emergency for the entire state on Friday afternoon. As of Saturday afternoon, the hurricane is approximately 1,000 miles away from Hawaii and moving in a general northwest direction.
According to the latest forecast, Hurricane Kiko is more likely to pass far enough north of Hawaii next week. However, tropical storm-force winds, heavy rainfall, and high surf associated with Hurricane Kiko could begin affecting portions of Hawaii as early as Monday, September 8, 2025.
The emergency proclamation, issued by Governor Luke, authorizes the Hawaii National Guard to assist civilian authorities and directs all state agencies to cooperate in response efforts. It also activates emergency measures and resources to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
Several state laws are temporarily suspended to facilitate expedited emergency response and recovery activities. The Major Disaster Fund has been activated to provide financial resources for emergency actions. The governor's office said the emergency proclamation is to ensure the safety and preparedness of communities.
The disaster emergency relief period continues through Sept. 19 unless extended or terminated earlier. The state is encouraging all residents to monitor official updates, follow preparedness instructions, and ensure they have emergency supplies on hand.
The storm is expected to gradually weaken over the next 24-48 hours, and by next week, Hurricane Kiko is expected to weaken to a tropical storm. Rapid weakening of Hurricane Kiko is expected as it tracks closer to the Hawaiian Islands due to unfavorable conditions like cooler ocean temperatures and dry air.
The emergency proclamation also concerns city developments in Hawaii due to Hurricane Kiko. Emergency measures will be implemented when Hurricane Kiko reaches Hawaii's territory, though the exact timing aligns with the hurricane's arrival, which is expected in September 2025.
The state of emergency declared by Sylvia Luke in September 2025 for Hurricane Kiko is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and preparedness of Hawaii's communities. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as Hurricane Kiko approaches.
